Lena Terlutter - DESIGNLOVR Interview 1

Lena Terlutter: Fashion Is Fleeting, Style Remains

Currently favourite designer - Isabel Marant, also known as “Carrie Bradshaw of the Belgian Four Part” among the people of Cologne, recently book author, fashionista and mother. May I introduce: Lena Terlutter. Her book “Cologne's got Style” has just been published, in her four fashion stores in Cologne, she shows in the Belgian Quarter what it means to have style, just like in our recent street style.

And today, Lena is the conversation partner on the question of her own style, trends for 2015 and groundbreaking designers. She tells us about her most important inspirations, favourite designers and keypieces, which should not be missing in any wardrobe.

Dear Lena, you are a fashionista, owner of four stores in Cologne, now also an author - where does the passion for fashion come from? And what fascinates you about it every day?

I have always been interested in fashion and design. I love to surround myself with beautiful things - this is reflected in my furniture as well as in my shops. It is of course great when you can turn your passion into a profession, as in my case. I look forward to standing in front of my wardrobe every day and trying out a new look.

Streetstyles, fashion week, trend magazines or everyday life - what are your most important sources of inspiration to track down the new trends, but at the same time gather new inspiration?

It's a colorful mix of many influences. Of course I know what the big names and designers are predicting or know every Streestyle trend, but the biggest source of inspiration for me is travel.

Clothes make people, that's always been the case. It's the first thing you see in a person, it's a statement.

“Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak”, said Rachel Zoe once. Are you of the same opinion?

Yes, I share Rachel's opinion! Clothes make people, that's always been the case. It's the first thing you see in a person, it's a statement.

The art of fashion is to develop your own style and to maintain it despite fast-moving trends. How do you manage to stay true to yourself and do you have a style icon that inspires you in this respect?

I love the look of Emmanuelle Alt. She always looks perfectly dressed without chasing the latest trends. She radiates coolness and elegance. It never goes out of fashion.

Which designer has the most decisive influence on the fashion world for you?

Of course this changes every season. At the moment it is definitely Isabel Marant - there is probably no label that doesn't follow the style of the Parisian. Her styles are timeless but commercial. This is a sure number for us as buyers.

Let's take a look at 2015 together: What is your must-have and what styles do you think shape fashion on the street?

It will remain sporty: casual styles, sneakers and flats, deep v-necks, satin & silk mixed with sweatshirt materials and lots and lots of white and denim.

Trends can be signposts, but also a kind of “fashion dictate” - how do you interpret the term?

I would never succumb to a trend just because someone pretends it's “trendy”. Fashion and trends come and go. It's important to find your style and feel good, THAT's the perfect outfit.

Is there a keypiece that hasn't been a “trend” for a long time, but that you could never think away from your wardrobe?

Yeah, the white T-shirt. I have more than 30 pieces. They are the key element of every outfit.

Casual styles, sneakers and flats, deep v-necks, satin & silk mixed with sweatshirt materials and lots of white and denim.

Credo, motto, vision - many terms are aimed at the same thing: What is your own philosophy with regard to trends and style?

Style is when you are at peace with yourself and all other fashion trends, when you wear your outfit with self-confidence and elegance, no matter if it is simple or fancy.

If you need to describe fashion in one sentence for yourself...

Fashion is fleeting, style remains. - Coco Chanel
