The Australian cosmetics manufacturer Aesop was founded in Melbourne in 1987. Known for high-end luxury skin, hair and body care products and unique store concepts, Aesop first opened its first store in Germany, Berlin Mitte, in mid-2013. “Each store is a new trailer, they are united by the product, not by some writing above the door”, said CEO Michael O’Keeffe in an interview with AD magazine.
Last week – after Berlin, Stuttgart and Cologne – the 4th Aesop store opened in Hamburg – in the historic ABC district, home to traditional Hanseatic stores and international designers.
Natural materials are the focus of the Hamburg Aesop store
The concept for the Aesop store in Hamburg was developed in collaboration with the Antwerp-based architectural firm Vincent Van Duysen. The focus was primarily on simple, natural materials, which were essentially influenced by the building as a listed historic site as well as the lively, modern milieu of the ABC district.
Walls and ceilings were restored to their original condition and finished with a light, rough textured plaster. A particular highlight is the sculptural chalkanthite sink, whose prominent impact supports the product demonstration. The calm and timeless scenery is rounded off by the floor, which is also lined with chalcanthite.
Interior mix of European oak and blackened steel
The interior is a mix of untreated European oak and blackened steel, reminiscent of the Aesop store’s original cast-iron facade. Floor-length linen curtains are hung in a discreet curve behind the cash register. They separate the treatment room from the rest of the store.
