Alvar Aalto

Alvar Aalto is known in many Nordic countries as the "father of modernism" and as a pioneer of Finnish architecture. From 1916 to 1921 Alvar Aalto, whose full name is Hugo Alvar Henrik Aalto, studied at the Helsinki University of Technology.

In 1923 Alvar Aalto settled as an architect in the Finnish Jyväskylä and began his career from there. In the late 1920s and early 1930s, he and his wife Aino Marsio travelled through Europe to learn about the latest modernist developments.

Alvar Aalto's designs are characterised by the minimalist use of natural materials. “We should make simple, good objects, without ornaments, objects in harmony with people, which radiate a natural everydayness in their form”, said Alvar Aalto.
