Wolfgang Joop

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe is one of the most famous architects of the 20th century. With his work he strove to develop his own style and to lead architecture into modernity. The expression of this is an unmistakable minimalism as well as the use of steel structures and glass facades.

Biography of Wolfgang Joop

Wolfgang Joop was born in Potsdam on November 18, 1944. When he was ten years old, he moved with his family to Braunschweig, where his father, the journalist Gerhard Joop, took a job with a magazine. Wolfgang graduated from high school in 1964 and then began studying advertising psychology at the Technical University of Braunschweig. However, he broke off his studies and worked as a restorer instead. Even a study in art education, which he began in 1968, did not bring Joop to completion.

In 1970 he participated in a design competition of the magazine “Constanze” and won the first three places with his creations. This success earned him a job as fashion editor at the magazine “Neue Mode”, but he soon quit to work as a freelance journalist and designer.

Wolfgang Joop advanced from restaurateur to fashion designer

It took until 1978 before Wolfgang Joop presented his first collection in New York. This also marked his breakthrough as a fashion designer. In 1987, he founded the company JOOP! together with Herbert Frommen, with which he launched clothing and shoes, but also jewelry and perfumes. A few years after its foundation, the company stopped manufacturing its own products and instead issued licenses to other companies.

In 1998, Joop sold 95 percent of his shares in the company, but remained its Creative Director. Three years later he also sold the remaining shares and left the company.

The life of Wolfgang Joop after JOOP! and Wunderkind

Together with his partner Edwin Lemberg, Joop founded the label Wunderkind in 2003, for which he designs high-end fashion. In addition to his work as a designer, Joop regularly appears as an illustrator. He has also written books such as “Das kleine Herz” (2001) and “Im Wolfspelz” (2003). His autobiography, which he wrote together with author Rebecca Casati, is entitled “Undressed. From a Life with Me” and was published in 2013. In the seasons nine and ten of the casting show “Germany’s Next Topmodel” Joop sat on the jury.

Wolfgang Joop was married to Karin Benatzky between 1970 and 1985, and their two daughters Jette and Florentine were born. Jette is also a designer, Florentine is a writer and painter. Since 2013 Joop is partnered with Edwin Lemberg and lives again in his hometown Potsdam.
